Ireland’s State magazine posted this Live review of Aphex Twin’s live DJ set at the Primavera Sound 2009 festival in Spain, today Friday May 29th 2009.

Another act that we expect an uncompromising set from is Aphex Twin. A typical gig from this messer consists of a mangled drill and base interpretation of his back catalogue interspersed with the odd middle finger raised aloft to his unfortunate fans. The faithful land down at him expecting the usual punishment. He then astonishes everyone by playing one of the most revelatory straight up dance sets I’ve ever heard, replete with strange visuals and strobing lights. When one of my mates manages to pick his jaw off the ground, he remarks to me, “Aphex Twin is actually playing Aphex Twin music”. Richard D James has obviously come to terms with the fact that he has one of the richest back catalogues in modern electronica. He spins out one blinding masterpiece after another, with material from his Analord series, Drukqs and even the seminal Richard D James album getting a straight up airing. It is a revelation, and if it is an omen of what is to come, we are in for some serious treats.

I guess the folks at state magazine didn’t listen to the Twin’s live set at last year’s Coachella festival, which was pretty much a straight dance DJ affair.
I hope someone taped the Primavera Sound show!

The mixing of electronic music and hip hop is nothing new. Back in 2000, The American hip hop crew Anti-pop Consortium were unexpectedly signed to UK electronica label Warp (which happens to be the most popular electronica label on the planet) with their innovative brand of idm beats backing up their avant garde rhyming.
Other idm artists such as Prefuse 73, Amon Tobin, Machine Drum and Nautilis also integrated chopped and digitally transformed hip hop verses in their IDM albums
Now there seems to be a resurgence of pure hip hop backed up with idm / electronica beats, as witnessed by the reunion of the Anti-pop Consortium, the new Amon Tobin hip hip project Two Fingers. There is a very interesting SF examiner article here that also documents a new resurgence in various merging electronica and hip hop in the SF Bay area. Act like Lazer Sword, DNAE Beats and Mochipet.
You can grab a DNAE mixtape from XLR8R
I look forward to a new era of electronic hip hop!

I am listening right now to this awesome bootleg of Venetian Snares Live at the STRP Festival Eindhoven 2009-04-04.
The sound of the boot is awesome, it seems it was grabbed from the console.
I grabbed the mp3 file from a torrent on the Pirate Bay.
The torrent seems to have gone dead, but you can still download the concert from hotfile HERE

I was surprised, i thought his live show consisted of mostly breakcore, etc, but he throws in all kinds of musical snipped and musical styles. IMHO, it blows away the free Amon Tobin live in Belgium album.
I can’t think of a better advertisement to go and see Venetian Snares play live!
